What is the function of bilge pumps?

To circulate fuel

To pump out flood water from the engine room

The essential idea is that bilge pumps remove water that collects in the bilge, keeping the lowest part of the ship dry. They’re especially crucial in the engine room, where water from leaks, rain, or condensation can accumulate and threaten machinery and stability. A bilge pump moves that water overboard or into another disposal location, helping to prevent flooding and maintain safe operation of the engine room. This is different from circulating fuel, which uses a fuel pump to move fuel to engines, or ballast pumps, which move seawater for trim and stability. It’s also not used to cool the hull. Some ships have automatic bilge pumps that start when water reaches a certain level, with redundancy to cope with failures.
